Some time in the last two years system trading (aka algorithmic or high-frequency or automated trading) has become the most prevalent form of trading. It accounts for more than 60% of trading volume on regulated exchanges.

Last week both Financial Times and The Economist run articles about system trading. The FT´s graph looks very informative, I´ve pinched it right here.
